HOW TO CORRELATE TRAINING SPEED WITH BEATS PER MINUTE
There are many fitness sites that claim to be able to correlate the number of steps people take per minute with the speed that they run.
Conventional wisdom is that there is a purely arithmetic relationship between speed and beats per minute. However, this simplimistic approach fails to consider the inverse relationship between age and maximum heart training rate.
The accepted formula for this in the fitness world is:
MAXIMUM HEART RATE = 85% x (220 - AGE)

Taking this into account, our studies have disputed these arithmetic charts by taking many athletes of all shapes and sizes and actually clocking them at various speeds. The result is most interesting and consistent with the metabolic maximum training rate chart:
The speed of the music stays relatively constant at the same running speeds for men and women of similar ages.
Music at 155 beats per minute is equivalent to an 8.5 minute mile; at 145 beats per minute to a 9.5 minute mile.
However, faster athletes of any height will ELONGATE THEIR STRIDES to avoid straining their hearts
So, as you get faster, a music speed over between 160 and 170 beats per minute allows you to train equally for an 8 minute mile or a 6 minute mile
